First Grade Lesson Plans

Students will be able to read words with consonant and vowel digraphs.
Students will be able to mark and decode words using the Reading Horizons system
Students will read sight words with fluently.
Students will be able to answer detail questions about a story including setting, characters, and retell events in order.

This weeks activities include:
Games and activities with the sight words including the pool noodle activity, concentration, go fish,etc.
Phonogram Drill
Dictation
Roll and Read
Reading Scott Foresman phonics stories and intervention text

Second Grade Lesson plans

Students will be able to read and comprehend text by answering who, what, when, where, why and how questions.
Students will be able to discuss setting, characters, and details of a passage.
Student will be able to decode words using the Reading Horizons marking system
Students will recognize by sight and read fluently all 400 Fry words
Practice and play games with sight words including go fish, concentration, fishing game, board games, roll and read, etc.

Read and answer questions from selected close read story

I am really excited about the progress that we are making with the reading horizons program. The children are learning to read and spell words with short vowels. First grade students are writing and spelling words that are dictated to them up to 5 letters. Second graders are spelling words correctly that have blends at the beginning and double consonants at the end. Both grades are correctly writing sentences with these words as they are dictated to them. I have seen so much growth in all the students so far. I think we are going to have the best DIBELs results we have ever had!!

Tips To Helping Your Child Become A Better Reader

* Read aloud traffic signs as you travel by car with your child.

* Stash books for your child to read in the car when traveling.

* Get a library card and find out about all of the exciting things happening at the Millbrook Public Library.

* Give books to your child as gifts and encourage them to buy books as gifts for others

* Play Board games together. You can even add their sight words as extra cards to read before they play their turn.

* Don't worry if your child wants to read the same story again and again.

* Write notes to your child.

* Set up a special place and time to read aloud to your child every night.
