I am really excited about the progress that we are making with the reading horizons program. The children are learning to read and spell words with short vowels. First grade students are writing and spelling words that are dictated to them up to 5 letters. Second graders are spelling words correctly that have blends at the beginning and double consonants at the end. Both grades are correctly writing sentences with these words as they are dictated to them. I have seen so much growth in all the students so far. I think we are going to have the best DIBELs results we have ever had!!

Reading Horizons Word List 1

We finally got our manuals for the new Reading Horizons program and the word list are different in the manual than on the trial computer program. I will be publishing all nine word lists so that you can use them to practice the words we are working on in class. I am going back and working on these word lists with the children as well.  When your child writes sentences encourage him/her to spell these words correctly. You might want to make flash cards or a notebook to keep these word lists in at home.

Classes Have Begun

Reading Intervention Classes started this week. We are excited about the Reading Horizons program that we are using. If you would like to know more about the program and what your child is doing in Reading Intervention class go to http://www.readinghorizons.com/ and take a tour of the program. The marking system introduced in the tour is the one we are teaching to your children. This should make a huge difference soon in your child ability to blend words and to sound out words with multiple syllables.

Beginning Reading Intervention Classes

We will begin reading intervention classes on Monday, August 23rd. If your child is placed in reading intervention classes you will be notified by letter on or before that date. I will be sending home a folder for each student that attends intervention classes. Please keep this folder in a safe place. I will be sending home fluency passages for the students to practice.  Keep the passages in this folder and have your child read them aloud every night. It is very important that you give your child the opportunity to read out loud to you for at least 20 minutes every night. Reading is a skill and must be practiced on a regular basis just like any other skill.

Welcome

Welcome to Coosada's Reading Intervention page. Our goal is to let you know what is going on in the reading intervention classroom and provide you with resources that will help improve your child's reading. We will be posting phonics activities and games. We will also post ideas to improve reading fluency and stories that you can print off to help your child practice his/her reading skills. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us through this blog and we will be glad to help.
My hope is that this page will be a place that parents can get ideas and share ideas about what has worked to improve the reading skills for their child. I want this page to be a positive place that uplifts all of us and helps us all to enjoy the wonderful process of learning to read for our children.
